25I-NBOME
Price range: $200 through $29,600
Description
25I-NBOMe (also known as 25I, N-Bomb, or Smiles) is a powerful synthetic hallucinogen that belongs to the phenethylamine family. It was first synthesized in 2003 for research purposes to map serotonin receptors in the brain but emerged as a recreational “designer drug” around 2010.
Key Characteristics
- Effects: It is a potent 5-HT2A receptor agonist, producing intense visual and auditory hallucinations, altered sense of time, and euphoria.
- Risk of Misidentification: It is frequently sold as LSD on blotter paper because it is active at very low microgram doses. However, unlike LSD, 25I-NBOMe is highly toxic and has been linked to numerous hospitalizations and fatalities.
- Administration: It is typically taken sublingually (under the tongue) or buccally (in the cheek) because it is largely inactive if swallowed.
Safety and Toxicity
Unlike “classical” psychedelics, 25I-NBOMe can cause severe physical side effects, including:
- Cardiovascular Stress: Rapid heart rate (tachycardia), high blood pressure, and vasoconstriction.
- Neurological Issues: Seizures, extreme agitation, aggression, and “excited delirium”.
- Serotonin Syndrome: A potentially life-threatening condition caused by excessive serotonin activity.
- Long-term Effects: Some users experience HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder), where visual disturbances continue for months or years after use
